24 May 2011 - 9:00What the SCPRSA Awards Mean to Us

We were really proud to bring home two trophies from the recent SCPRSA Mercury awards.

That’s because they signify what we already know: we have the extraordinary good fortune to work with the best clients around! As a result, our social media/Facebook campaign for Cupcake took home a Silver Wing Award, and our collaboration with JMC Charleston on the fundraising premier of Dear John for Carolina Autism netted a Mercury Award.

In the end, our rewards come every day, in the form of our clients’ improved business performance.

15 December 2010 - 16:34Charleston TV Stations Cover Push for Summerville Smoking Ban

We have been working with Smoke Free Lowcountry Coalition (SFC) to ensure that Summerville workers have the same protection from secondhand smoke exposure on the job. The bill passed at the first reading on Dec. 8, and a second and final reading is scheduled for Jan. 12. The public is invited to share their opinions during the public hearing period at the beginning of the Town Council meeting. Dorchester County is also introducing a smoking ordinance on Jan. 18.

Here are some facts about smoking ordinances:

  • A successful smokefree ordinance in Summerville will bring the total to 38 municipalities and cover more than 1,400,000 South Carolinians. Locally, Charleston, Sullivan’s Island, Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Hollywood and Ravenel are covered by smokefree laws
  • Currently, 74.1 % of Americans are covered by some kind of smokefree workplace ordinance.
  • There are 3,173 municipalities that have passed laws that restrict where smoking is allowed
  • 22 states have a law in effect that prohibits smoking in workplaces, restaurants and bars

12 July 2010 - 9:03LeBron and the “Art” of the Press Conference

Think last week’s LeBron James press conference was a little over-the-top? That an hour of airtime devoted solely to “the decision” was about forty-five minutes too much? Or perhaps you think it was tactically genius PR for both the ball player and his new team? Either way, there’s no arguing that James’ announcement will go down as one of the more memorable in sports history. (For a quick video recap of its delivery, click here.)

Friday’s Wall Street Journal has even taken the liberty of conjuring up a “look back at some of sports’ recent gather-round-the-TV moments” to rank LeBron amongst the best (or worst, I suppose) of them. The top five: Michael Jordan’s ’93 first retirement announcement, Magic Johnson’s ’91 diagnosis with HIV, Wayne Gretzkey’s unusual third-person delivery of his 1988 trade from the Oilers to the Kings, Kobe Bryant’s proclamation of innocence in a 2003 sexual assault case, and my personal favorite, Brett Favre’s series of retirement announcements in 2008 and ’09. 17 March 2010 - 10:59Folbot Takes WAll Street Journal AGAIN!

Folbot once again graces a feature article in the Wall Street Journal. Folbot’s first appearance in the newspaper in a September 2008 article discussed how companies are broadening their businesses to international markets. Now, Folbot takes the stage again in a March 15 article discussing social media and marketing.

The article begins:

Last year, Jackie Siddall described in a blog post how a message she received on Twitter prompted her to buy a folding kayak for around $1,900.

The vessel was one of about just 600 sold in 2009 by Folbot Inc., a small retailer in Charleston, S.C. “You can’t buy that exposure,” says the firm’s co-owner, David AvRutick, who claims the incident speaks to the value of using social media for marketing.

Then, various new studies about social media use among businesses are mentioned. Some positive, some negative. The story then returnes to Folbot:

Mr. AvRutick says he regularly searches Twitter for tweets that mention kayaking and then sends messages to the people who wrote them. He connected with Ms. Siddall, the blogger who credited Twitter for exposing her to Folbot, after she posted a tweet that mentioned she wanted a kayak.

Ms. Siddall, a 37-year-old senior designer for Idea Couture Inc., a creative-marketing agency in Toronto, says she was unaware that folding kayaks even existed until she heard from Mr. AvRutick. She spent the next few months researching different brands, which included perusing a networking forum on Folbot’s Web site about kayaking.

Ms. Siddall says she later asked Mr. AvRutick via Twitter if he would send her some photos of her folding kayak being made, and he provided about 20. After it arrived, she says she decided to write a blog post about the whole experience.

“I didn’t find the same level of information or communication online from the other brands,” she says.

We’d like to give special thanks to the Charleston Regional Development Alliance and the Development Counsellors International for making this article happen!

24 September 2009 - 9:00Charleston Saves $ and Energy!

When I originally looked over Charleston County green initiative, I was a little disappointed with measures such as “buy one hybrid car.” Last month, the county announced that they saved $350,000 in just four months with their Energy Conservation Program, which was an internal effort of county staff.

Additionally, the county used 7% less kilowater hours since the program began in March. The ultimate goal is to reduce energy use by 10% by July 1, 2010.

The staff took measures such as turning off lights and equipment at night, setting temperature no lower than 70 and no higher than 74, turning off cooling and heating in noncritical buildings on weekends and replacing light bulbs. These simple measures are a great example of how small steps can save money and reduce our environmental impact.

Congrats to Charleston County and keep up the good work!

15 July 2009 - 15:21Trident Tech and Charleston International Airport going green!

According to a Post & Courier article last week, Trident Technical College is implementing a green stratefy at all three campuses and every training site.

The initiative is called TTC Green and involves a partnership with Virginia Tech for help with things like “green” building construction, engineering technology and management and certifications leading to green careers.

Part of the emphasis includes a training program done in cooperation with Veterans Green Jobs, which will offer vets green jobs education and career development to help make a smooth transition into civilian careers.

In other green Charleston news, the airport has introduced recycling throughout the terminals. CRBJ announced today that the airport has already collected 90 tons of recyclables from airport staff in the last 10 months. I can only imagine how much recycling they can collect with both passengers and staff recycling!!

19 May 2009 - 17:29“Reflect” on the need to protect your skin from sun damage

The Spa at Charleston Place and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) have partnered again to help local residents avoid the very real threat of melanoma. I Will Reflect (IWR) raises awareness and funds for melanoma prevention. Special materials and unique bracelets that change color in sunlight help locals ‘reflect’ on the need to protect their skin.

Why? Because of the coastal location of the Charleston area, many residents are exposed to the sun on a daily basis and many people are not properly protecting their skin. The incidence of melanoma continues to rise significantly, at a rate faster than that of any of the seven most common cancers (source: melanoma.com). The survival rate for patients, whose melanoma is detected early, before the tumor has penetrated the epidermis, is about 99%. The survival rate falls to 15% for those with advanced disease (source: melanoma.com)

There are several ways to “reflect:”

  • Wear an “I Will Reflect” bracelet, which glows purple when the wearer’s skin is exposed to dangerous sun rays. Bracelets will be sold at The Spa at Charleston Place and MUSC for $3, and serve as a reminder to reflect on the need to protect skin on a daily basis. All proceeds will be donated to the MUSC Foundation’s Department of Dermatology
  • Pamper yourself with two luxury “I Will Reflect” treatments and The Spa at Charleston Place will donate 10% of the cost to MUSC. These treatments combine an indulgent facial or massage with sun safety tips, skin checks and sunscreen gifts.
  • Enjoy a 25% discount on a specialty suncare treatment when wearing an “I Will Reflect” bracelet.
  • Share the message of skin protection with family and friends by wearing an “I Will Reflect” bracelet.
  • Wear sunscreen year round using a minimum of SPF 15.
  • Seek shade between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Schedule an annual full-body skin check with a dermatologist.
